George - He's the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who lives with my parents. The vet put him on Prednisone and he is doing remarkably well. As my mom says, it has turned the clock back. He still has really, really bad underlying heart problems, but at least he's got some good days now.
Lenny the Fish - The Betta Fish that lives at WGBH. He had some trouble with fin rot. I think he's doing better. I've been doing nearly daily 40% water changes. He looks stronger to me and has a better color. It's going to take a few weeks for the fins to grow back to their full length so only time will tell.
Sam the Budgerigar - lives with me. He's.... ok. A vet tech called me back yesterday with his remaining blood work. His results were slightly off but nothing that screamed diagnosis. We're going to keep him on the Amphotericin and 2 antibiotics for now and see if that helps. He may just have a general gastrointestinal infection. He's social, singing and seems happy enough. Not 100% though. His stomach is distended a little and he still gets poopy butt. Taking it day by day.

Sam / Vet Visit / 2 more meds
I brought Sam to a monthly checkup today. He's still dealing with Avian Gastric Yeast. He's been on Amphotericin for a couple of months. He got better for a while and plateaued at mediocre, so I knew something was wrong. When the vet checked him today, she said that his stomach is distended abnormally - this is new. They took poop and blood tests. He still has AGY and his white count came back normal. I'm waiting on the rest of his blood tests. I should get those by tomorrow. In the meantime, he's been put on two antibiotics twice daily starting tonight. So, as a refresher, Sam and Max are both on Amphotericin twice daily. Sam is now on 2 antibiotics on top of that, twice daily.
Poor Sam. He could have a tumor, an infection, cancer, liver problems... Hard to say. The blood tests might not answer the question either. They might do ct-scans on him or a radiograph next.
And you'd never believe how much blood they can get from a little bird.

Top Ten Reasons Why It's Awesome to be 39 and Single
I'm turning 40 in October. It's freaking me out a little. So, I came up with some things that put a smile on my face.
Top Ten Reasons Why It's Awesome to be 39 and Single
1. House plants. Lots of them. Even ones I have to mist and mispronounce.
2. White briefs. Slightly baggy.
3. Timmy the Teddy Bear doesn't fart under the covers.
4. Vegan 24/ 7/ 365
5. Wow, what a beautiful day! I could go for a jog... or I could stay indoors and crochet all day... Hmm, crochet it is!
6. Barbie PJs. At noon.
7. Doing laundry. Just mine. Whenever.
8. I'm tired. I'm going to bed early tonight. Tomorrow night. The night after that. Maybe even every night from now on. Or, maybe not. We'll see.
9. Retail therapy. Not couples therapy.
10. No in-laws! Ha! Top that!

Retail therapy! I went to Marshalls in the Arsenal Mall. I bought a wheat colored cardigan with pretty gold and cream buttons and a double sized hot pink/floral chiffon scarf (like I need another scarf). I really need bottoms and shirts but didn't find much that was work-appropriate.
I went to CVS and picked up my thyroid meds. They were in. Yay! Now I won't keel over. While there, I dropped off 2 kitchen garbage bags full of old clothes at the Planet Aid drop box. I got rid of anything ripped, faded or unflattering. My closet is pretty barren now.
And I stopped by FRONTLINE to water plants and change the water in the fish tank. I think Lenny the fish might be getting better. He's been battling fin rot. I think he looks a little healthier.
My hair still looks really good from my salon appointment Friday night. I wonder if I could do a weekly wash and style. Hmm, I need to think about that. Not sure I can afford it.

Plants Update - Peas Sprouting! - 5/19/2013
A quick update on some of my spring plants-
Peas sprouting.
This is one of the white geranium cuttings I took a long while ago. This one looks like it took.
Balcony planters. The alyssum seedlings are getting bigger.

Dragging
I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I've had it for years. It's an auto immune condition. It slows down metabolism and gives me migraine headaches and severe leg cramps. I was diagnosed in 1996. If I take a thyroid pill every morning, I'm totally fine... but I'm completely out. I called and left a message at the doctor's on Thursday on their prescription refill message line. Tick tock. Nobody called me back. I feel like a wind up toy that's winding down. Ugh.
Today I got my nails and eyebrows done and picked up/dropped off laundry at the wash and fold. I've done little else though. I feel like I'm carrying 50 pounds of bricks around. I'll call the doctor again on Monday. It's going to be a long weekend dragging myself around like this.

Happy Friday! 5/17/2013
I did indeed start back on my diet this morning. Pineapple slices and coffee. I wasn't hungry enough for toast and beans after my chow down last night. I feel so over-salted from the Chinese food. Even the skin on my fingers feels tight. So, so gross.
I totally forgot to update about George, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The vet in Rhode Island put him on a blast of prednisone. Week one, high dose. Week two, medium. Week three, light dose every other day. He's been on it a couple of days and he's doing GREAT. Eating like a trooper and stronger. The vet may keep him on prednisone permanently if this works for him. Prednisone is a steroid. It's terrible for his heart condition but it helps his liver problem. His health is generally pretty bad. It's about making smart choices. They can't fix his heart but they can make him feel better for a while. He's happy and that's really all that matters.
My blog about antiques is doing really well. New Olden Days I get a ton more page views than this diary. I think it's because people find it in search engines when they're actually looking for things. The search term 'Antique Commode' gets way more hits than you'd imagine. Who the heck is looking for an antique commode I do not know. . .

Post Script Diet Fiasco 5/16/2013
I ordered Chinese food tonight. All by myself. General Tso's Tofu. It was yummy. I've been pretty wayward on my diet for a couple of months. And by pretty wayward, I mean I've gained about 12 pounds and my clothes are tight. And by tight, I mean I'm getting muffin top from regular rise jeans. I feel like I inhaled a pumpkin. I really need to work up the motivation to go back on the diet... I weigh in on Saturdays and that's my day-1 for tracking. Tomorrow is Friday. Not sure if I'll take 1 more day off and enjoy myself again tomorrow or just start back on it tomorrow. I just know I feel pretty gross.
Domino and Pilea 5/16/2013
I slept terrible last night. Domino was rattling around all night. I had to get up a couple of times to give them food to keep them busy. I hate those nights when she seems to have insomnia.
The pilea that I rooted a while back has sprouted out a bunch of new leaves recently. It's starting to look like a real potted plant and not just a few leaves stuck in the soil.
And there's my tillandsia behind it, outgrowing the globe it came with.

Freak Out Central 5/15/2013
Things are ok. I've got a lot going on right now and I'm a bit stressed out. George isn't well. The fish at work has developed fin rot. One of my orchids is dying - yellowing leaves and dry roots. And I'm still dealing with the birds' avian gastric yeast. So I've got my hands full. :/
I realized the other day that I need new clothes. I pulled apart my whole closet and found only 3 outfits that I look professional in. Unfortunately they're all winter outfits. I need new clothes baaaaad. And shoes. Maybe a purse. And a new iPhone cover. I'm tired of people commenting on my iPhone bunny ears. Ok, maybe it's not so professional pulling out large pink bunny ears to check my phone but I thought they were cute for the first few weeks. I feel a mall trip in the near future. Retail therapy.
