Sunday 6/16/2013

Today is Father's Day.  My dad drove up to visit and we had lunch together.

No huge news in the apartment.  Everything is status quo.  The creatures are all ok.  Well, Max is still on medication for Avian Gastric Yeast, but other than that, everything is coasting along.

The tomato plants on my balcony are already ginormous.  No tomatoes yet, of course, but there are blossoms.  I still don't know whether I'll get any fruit off of these.  This morning I moved the plants to the sunniest corner of the balcony but I'm not confident that they'll produce.

Tuesday 7/11/2013

I brought Max to the vet today for a checkup.  He lost 8 grams!  A lot for a little budgie.  He's 31 grams now.  The fatty area (maybe tumor) on his chest is gone.  He is still testing positive for avian gastric yeast.  So he's staying on another month of Amphotericin and I have to weigh him on my kitchen scale to make sure he's not losing more weight.

My balcony planter looks fantastic.  I'm not sure I get enough sunlight to actually get ripe tomatoes but the plants are doing well.

The End of a Life

I had Sam cremated through Angell Memorial.  The cremate arrived via post yesterday.  I have never seen this turnaround so fast - less than a week.  Instant gratification culture comes to cremation.

He was a little parakeet so there isn't much left.  It's kind of sad really.  Poor little thing.

This is what I got in the mail:

Ever since Sam died, Max has been super clingy.  I honestly don't know if he's lonely or ill himself.  We have another vet appointment on Tuesday.  He seems to be eating and drinking normally so I'm just going to wait until Tuesday unless something happens between now and then.

Me and Max, my new BFF

Tuesday 6/4/2013

Max is slowly adjusting to being an only bird.  He's been very clingy with me.  He literally went overnight from "Get the heck away from me, run for your lives!" to "Excuse me, is this shoulder taken?"  He's like a different bird.  A friendly bird.  Or maybe he's just so depressed he's trying suicide by human.  He's still on Amphotericin and we have a follow up vet visit in a week... but I have to drive over there tomorrow night to pick up a refill of the Amphotericin for him.  Angell looks so close on a map.  It's a solid hour round trip and sometimes more with heavy traffic.  And I was just there on Saturday to pick up the travel carrier I'd left there last time for Sam.

The vet called me at the end of last week to let me know the results of Sam's autopsy.  He had a very large, inoperable testicular tumor.  Poor little guy.

I'm pooped.  I look forward to the day when they're all healthy again.

Ancestry DNA Results

I bought a DNA test kit via  I can't even believe how fast it was- about two weeks between mailing the kit and receiving the results.  And here are the results:

All four of my grandparents are different ethnicities.  One is Italian American (14% Southern European).  One is Polish/Goral American (11% Eastern European).  The other two, my maternal grandparents, were Irish-American and English/Scottish - and those results are nil.  You'd think I'd have at least SOME small percentage British Isles....??!!!  I called my mom last night and asked her who my real mommy is.  Must be some Norwegian lady - 67% Scandinavian?  If I didn't look so much like both parents, I might be worried.

Last Update on Sam 5/30/2013

Sam got progressively worse over Memorial Day.  I brought him to the vet yesterday.  The vet drew a very small amount of blood for tests and he nearly passed out.  Just like a person, he wobbled around a bit and then perked up again.  The test results showed he was severely anemic.  There is a possibility he developed ulcers in his digestive tract and was bleeding internally.  They kept him to start him on clotting drugs and a drug to coat his GI tract.  The hope was to keep him going until this morning when the ct scanner was available.  But, he died soon after his first round of medication.  I'm going to have him cremated.

That's what's going on here.  I'm kinda down but have to go back to work today.

Memorial Day Monday 2013

Midway through a massive housecleaning session.  Cathartic, totally.

George, Lenny and Sam Updates 5/22/2013

George - He's the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who lives with my parents.  The vet put him on Prednisone and he is doing remarkably well.  As my mom says, it has turned the clock back.  He still has really, really bad underlying heart problems, but at least he's got some good days now.

Lenny the Fish - The Betta Fish that lives at WGBH.  He had some trouble with fin rot.  I think he's doing better.   I've been doing nearly daily 40% water changes.  He looks stronger to me and has a better color.  It's going to take a few weeks for the fins to grow back to their full length so only time will tell.

Sam the Budgerigar - lives with me.  He's.... ok.  A vet tech called me back yesterday with his remaining blood work.  His results were slightly off but nothing that screamed diagnosis.  We're going to keep him on the Amphotericin and 2 antibiotics for now and see if that helps.  He may just have a general gastrointestinal infection.  He's social, singing and seems happy enough.  Not 100% though.  His stomach is distended a little and he still gets poopy butt.  Taking it day by day.

Sam / Vet Visit / 2 more meds

I brought Sam to a monthly checkup today.  He's still dealing with Avian Gastric Yeast.  He's been on Amphotericin for a couple of months.  He got better for a while and plateaued at mediocre, so I knew something was wrong.  When the vet checked him today, she said that his stomach is distended abnormally - this is new.  They took poop and blood tests.  He still has AGY and his white count came back normal.  I'm waiting on the rest of his blood tests.  I should get those by tomorrow.  In the meantime, he's been put on two antibiotics twice daily starting tonight.  So, as a refresher, Sam and Max are both on Amphotericin twice daily.  Sam is now on 2 antibiotics on top of that, twice daily.

Poor Sam.  He could have a tumor, an infection, cancer, liver problems...  Hard to say.  The blood tests might not answer the question either.  They might do ct-scans on him or a radiograph next.

And you'd never believe how much blood they can get from a little bird.
